Bridge. It’s for old people isn’t it?
Actually, you couldn’t be more wrong. Did you know that bridge is now a sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee with a huge international following and a category for under 25s? That a match can last for several nail-biting hours and is hotly competitive? Or that playing bridge is a great way to develop your powers of deductive reasoning and mental capacity?
Competitive bridge is not a game of luck. It is a battle of wits between two teams playing the same cards at two or more tables. You build up a picture of the unseen hands using logical deductions, inferences from the actions of your opponents and information received from your partner. Then you utilise your technical skills to get the very best out of your cards.
If you’re looking for mental stimulation that doesn’t involve poring over a computer screen on your own this summer, our workshops are for you. They’ll be led by Chris Dixon, a Bath resident and one of the world’s greatest bridge players. Exceptional players may even be offered the chance to continue their training to national trial level. Whatever your experience, these Youth Bridge sessions will test your intellectual mettle to the full. And if you book all four workshops they’ll set you back just five pounds each for the day.
